The Question:

The biggest problem I’m having is getting my daughter to accept what I’m saying about nutrition as true or important!

The Answer:

All right! Welcome back to the Stay Fueled Podcast. My name is Dr. Joshua Eldridge. I’m the founder of Stay Fueled. Today, our question comes from Bob, and this one’s awesome. Parents, you’re going to absolutely love this. But this is what Bob had to say, “Probably the biggest struggle with my nutrition and with my athlete is getting her to accept what I’m saying about nutrition as true and important.”

I’m a parent and I know that when I tell my young athletes, my young children something, I know it’s going to be very difficult for them to want to listen to Dad or Mom as the expert because your Dad or Mom. What can you possibly know? Right?

The same way that we were with our parents, “Mom and Dad, what do you know? You guys are old fuddy-duddies.” So that’s going to be completely typical for young kids, and especially teenagers. So this is what I encourage you to do and this is going to be a shameless plug for our three-part series on recovery, but go over to stayfueled.com, sign up for our newsletter, get our three-part series on recovery.

And during that series on recovery, we have a whole section about what athletes should be eating through the day. What do they need? What type of intake does an athlete need to make sure that they’re at their peak and they’re performing at the level that they need to be? And let me be your go-to resource for nutrition. It’s the same stuff you guys have been saying for years at home. I know it. You know it. But when you allow your athlete to be taught by someone that might be outside the home that they see as an expert, then – it’s just the way it is – but I’m here for you as parents as a resource for nutrition and health.

So that’s what I would encourage you to do. I know what it’s like. I said at the beginning it’s kind of a shameless plug for our three-part series on recovery, but it’s something that you can do for your young athlete to allow them to make it their own idea. And that’s what we actually want to get around to because they’re going to go and they’re going to watch this series on recovery. And they’re going to come to you and be like, “Mom, I need a midmorning snack, I need my pre-workout snack because I’m going to be a great athlete if I have that energy all through practice.” You’re going to be like, “Suzy, that’s what I’ve been telling you for three years.” They’re going to be like, “Yeah, but this is my idea, Mom, so we’re going to make it work.” And that’s just the way it is with our young athletes. We need to make it seem like it’s their idea, and this is a great resource for you to do that.
